That Long?

While reading some LJ entries that I made around this time last year in my old page, I read an entry where I was talking about an interview I was about ready to go on. I can't believe it's been a year since I first started looking for employment somewhere else. True, it hasn't been a very intense job hunt, but it's been a year nonetheless.

In light of that, yesterday's interview with former employer went rather well. However, unlike the last prospective employer I interviewed with, I won't be too terribly disappointed if I don't get this job. While I am interested in the position, the fact is that the company is not one I will be enthusiastic about working for. Sadly, I don't think I'll ever get a job for such a company -- at least not anytime soon and not so long as I remain in my current profession.

Harry Potter, Tool of Satan

With all the real dangers and problems facing the world today, it's nice to know that the true fundamentalist right-wing nuts are working hard to protect our children from the evils of Harry Potter:

"The things that concern me about the Harry Potter series," [Tim Todd,] the preacher and Christian publisher notes, "are things like sacrificing animals and emphasizing power, regardless of good or evil. Or offering up blood sacrifices, and things like boiling what seems to be a baby alive in a cauldron, or being possessed by demons -- these are not things that we want to have our children subjected to."

Hmmm.... blood sacrifices and boiling a baby alive in a cauldron. Nope, don't remember that from the first five books. Maybe it's something in the sixth book I just haven't gotten around to reading yet, but damn it, this is the first I've heard of it.

Of course, it's not like a columnist from the Christian right ever got wrong information about the book before.

Moving Forward

It's official -- I'm returning to the mother ship (i.e., my first post-college employer) on August 15. Nowhere near the excitement a job offer from the panda people would've caused, but I am relieved the hunt is over and that a fresh start is coming very soon. My only regret is that I'll have to tell the recruiter that I am now off the market and that I found a new position on my own. It seems a shame that all her hard work went for nought.

Edit to add (2:40 PM): Wow, two hours later and I am still relatively nonplussed. Relieved it's over, but no real excitement over this. Very anti-climatic.

This Year's National Book Festival

The list of authors appearing at the 2005 National Book Festival in DC is officially online Unfortunately, it looks like science fiction and fantasy is not getting its own tent this year. In fact, it looks like sf is barely getting any attention at all. This year's sf authors:

E. L. Doctorow (do'h! got him confused with Corey), Neil Gaiman, George R. R. Martin

And that's it! I don't know if they just couldn't get sf writers to turn out or whether the organizers just decided to that the genre really wasn't worth their attention this year, but either way it's a rather pathetic turnout. Just as a point of reference, compare this year's [ahem] list to last year's list of sf writers:

Catherine Asaro, Ben Bova, Lois McMaster Bujold, Neil Gaiman, Frederik Pohl, Neal Stephenson, Connie Willis

As an sf fan, this year's festival just isn't worth my attention.

Edit to add, 3:40 PM: After combing through the lists of authors for the past four years, I see that last year's Festival was actually an aberration. By and large, sf doesn't seem to really show up on the organizers' radar. I wonder what made them change their minds last year.

My Awesome Powers of ESP

I just got a call from Mrs. Moose. Apparently, Tank's daycare is shutting down early because the air conditioner has stopped working. This really isn't a concern as he is with one of his grandmothers on a trip to visit a great-grandmother in North Carolina. However, what makes this rather amusing is that my excuse for cutting out of work yesterday to make my interview with my new employer was... wait for it... I think you know where I'm going with this... Tank's daycare was shutting down early because the air conditioner had stopped working.

Now, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!
