McDonald's Moose

The Marching Morons

There was a lame piece on Fox 5 News this morning that tried presenting RFIDs as a great boon to everyone. Sure, they paid lip service to the arguments against their use in commercial products (i.e., privacy concerns) but by and large the piece was about how they work and how they benefit the consumer by way of lower prices for goods. Don't worry about the fact your new watch transmits information about you -- you're saving money!

As if that wasn't enough to make you think corporate-controlled media was busy trying to turn Americans into mindless, ever-consuming sheep, there was the Time magazine ad I saw on the Metro this morning. It was nothing more than a picture of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston in happier days, the Time logo and a few words to the effect of "how to find out why." That's great -- anyone else remember when Time was a leading news magazine that cared about presenting news and important information rather than mindless celebrity gossip that has no bearing whatsoever on our lives!?

Now, if Brad left Jennifer for say Rue McClanahan, then I think there's a story that belongs in Time.

I swear, the more I see around me, the more convinced I am that this country is turning into a C. M. Kornbluth short story. Or is that a novel he co-authored with Frederik Pohl? I can't tell anymore.
