Baseball Howler of the Day

I understand that it's the job of a sports agent to make his player look as good as possible when it's contract time. Scott Boras, as much as I despise the guy's tactics, is one of the best in the game and I can see why players continue to go to him. However, when reading about the stats binder he put together to give to teams who are interested in Johnny Damon's services, I came across something that right away should make any knowledgeable baseball fan howl with derision: to whit, a section in the binder titled, ""Better Than Future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson."

Hey Scotty -- Henderson's lifetime OBP was .401 & the best Damon has done in a single season is .380. Oh, given that Damon has played his entire career in an high offense era (unlike Henderson, who played the first half of his career at the end of a low offense era), that .431 to .419 edge in career slugging percentage is negligible. Better than future HOFer Rickey Henderson, my ass.

As funny as that is, the absolute best part is Boras's ironic statement regarding the computation of Damon's projected career numbers:

... the information in the binder also projects that Damon will record his 3,000th hit by 2012; play more games in center field than anyone in baseball history by 2015; and have the second-highest fielding percentage ever by a center fielder a decade from now, too.

"I'm not often surprised by numbers," Boras said. "I was surprised by some of what we came up with in regard to Johnny."

What else should you expect from a man who compared J. D. Drew to Mickey Mantle before he even signed his first major league contract for the Phillies Cardinals.
